Overview
The Woodward ProTech-GⅡ Overspeed Protection Device is a high-performance digital safety system meticulously engineered for steam, gas, and hydro turbines. It serves as a critical safety barrier in industrial and power generation scenarios, continuously monitoring turbine rotor speed and acceleration. Once overspeed or abnormal acceleration is detected, the device rapidly triggers a safe shutdown procedure to prevent catastrophic equipment damage, production downtime, and potential safety hazards. With its IEC 61508 SIL – 3 certification and compliance with API 670 & API 612 standards, it stands out as a reliable choice for mission – critical rotation machinery protection across global industrial sectors.
Core Features
Triple – Redundant Voting Architecture for Maximum Reliability
The device adopts a sophisticated 2 – out – of – 3 voting logic, consisting of three independent speed detection modules (A, B, and C) and corresponding trip relays. A shutdown command is only activated when at least two modules simultaneously detect an overspeed condition. This redundant design drastically reduces the risk of false trips caused by single – module malfunctions or sensor errors, ensuring uncompromised operational stability even in harsh industrial environments.
Ultra – Fast Response & Wide Speed Adaptability
Boasting an impressive response time of just 12 milliseconds for independent voting output models, the ProTech – GⅡ can initiate emergency shutdowns in an instant when abnormal speed conditions occur. It supports a broad speed range from 0.5 to 32,000 rpm, seamlessly adapting to the speed monitoring needs of various turbine sizes and types, from small industrial turbines to large – scale power generation units.
Dual Power Supply & Robust Environmental Resistance
It offers flexible power input configurations, including high – voltage/high – voltage (90 – 240 VAC/100 – 150 VDC) or high – voltage/low – voltage (90 – 240 VAC/18 – 32 VDC) options. The dual – redundant power supply design allows the device to operate normally with either one or both power sources, eliminating risks associated with power outages. With an IP56 enclosure rating, it is dust – proof and resistant to strong water jets, performing stably in operating temperatures ranging from – 20°C to + 60°C and storage temperatures from – 20°C to + 65°C.
Intuitive Operation & Comprehensive Diagnostic Logs
Equipped with a 15 – key keypad and digital display, the device enables convenient on – site configuration of speed thresholds, alarm parameters, and other settings. LED indicators on the panel clearly show the operational status of each module. Additionally, it features powerful logging capabilities, automatically recording the last 50 trip or alarm events and the last 20 overspeed incidents along with their timestamps. This data is invaluable for post – fault analysis and maintenance optimization.
Seamless Integration with Industrial Control Systems
The device supports Modbus communication protocols and provides a 4 – 20 mA speed output signal, allowing easy integration with existing DCS (Distributed Control Systems) and monitoring platforms in factories. For enhanced connectivity needs, an optional Ethernet communication gateway is also available. It also offers two installation methods—panel mounting and bulkhead mounting—to fit different equipment layout requirements.
